Virtual Learn & Connect Meetings

These meetings are FREE and offer Spanish-speaking audiologists and AuD students an opportunity to practice and expand their medical/professional Spanish language skills. They provide participants with a platform where they can:

  • Listen to experts present in Spanish on different topics of interest

  • Expand their professional vocabulary in areas of clinical practice.

  • Network and interact with other bilingual colleagues from around the country.

  • Discuss current challenges and brainstorm solutions to improve audiological care for the Latino/Hispanic community.

Language as a Social Determinant of Health

Javier Gonzalez, MA | Director of Language Initiatives, Immigrant Health and Cancer Disparities Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Javier leads the Language Initiatives Program at the Immigrant Health and Cancer Disparities (IHCD) Service. The IHCD Service works to identify and eliminate disparities in health and cancer treatment among immigrants and underserved populations. Javier has developed curricula for both in-person and distance learning solutions for interpreters, providers, and patients, and has leveraged technology to improve access and efficiency in language service delivery. Additionally, his efforts focus on increasing the representation of minorities in clinical trials. Javier currently serves on the Board of Directors at the National Association for Medical Spanish.

Audiology-specific Quality of Life Measures Available in Spanish: Use and Utilization

Oscar Cañete, PhD | Clinical Development Specialist | Visitor Academic - University of Auckland

Oscar M. Cañete, Ph.D., es especialista en audiología y clínico-investigador con más de 15 años de experiencia internacional en el área de la salud auditiva. Se formó como Tecnólogo Médico en Otorrinolaringología en la Universidad de Chile y obtuvo el doctorado en la Universidad de Auckland, Nueva Zelanda, donde investigó el procesamiento auditivo en personas con hipoacusia unilateral. Su trayectoria combina la práctica clínica en hospitales y clínicas con la investigación en universidades y la industria de dispositivos médicos. Ha liderado y colaborado en proyectos sobre procesamiento auditivo, adaptación de pruebas audiológicas y estrategias de rehabilitación auditiva, contribuyendo en múltiples publicaciones científicas. Sus intereses se relacionan con la medición de la funcionalidad auditiva en adultos y niños utilizando cuestionarios. Su motivación es mejorar la calidad de vida de personas con pérdida auditiva mediante investigación aplicada y soluciones innovadoras en audiología.

What to expect during these meetings

These meetings are open to ALL Spanish speaking audiologists and AuD students in the U.S. (Hispanic and non-Hispanic). Participants should expect:

  • Guest speakers who are experts in the field and also fluent Spanish speakers.

  • This september we will host two guest speakers and our meeting will extend to 75 minutes.

  • Networking and open discussion (15 min).
